Before the Trail

Roots

Two campesino families from Guanacaste and Bagaces who crossed the Gulf of Nicoya looking for land, and a grandfather from Puriscal who came together with a grandmother native to Pérez Zeledón's indigenous communities — they came together in José María "Pía" Alvarado Agüero and Bellanira Guzmán Marín. This is what could be pieced together so far, thanks to tío Franklin's memoir, two family memorial cards, and the memory of those still here to tell it.

The Core

From great-grandparents to today's generation — the direct line. Every card with more history can be explored further down, in the extended families.

Paternal Origin (Maternal Side) — Alvarado Line

Mercedes Agüero Araya — from Bebedero de Bagaces, also crossed the gulf in search of new land.

"La Cosecha de una Vida" (A Lifetime's Harvest)

The memoir of tío Franklin Alvarado Agüero — 47 handwritten pages on his parents' and siblings' lives in Guanacaste, Bagaces, and Osa — is the richest source we have on this family. With his permission, more of his account will be shared here someday.
