Drake Bay cannot be reached by an ordinary road, and that is the first surprise for anyone planning from far away. After years of welcoming travelers on this coast, these are the four real routes from San José.

The four routes

  1. Boat from Sierpe. The one most people use: drive or bus to Sierpe, then a boat through the mangroves. About 6 to 8 hours in total, and the boat costs roughly US$20 to 30 per person.
  2. 4x4 via Rincón. About 6.5 to 7 hours, and longer in the rain. It needs a capable vehicle and an experienced driver.
  3. 4x4 using the Sierpe vehicle ferry. 7 to 8 hours; the most adventurous option, best in the dry season.
  4. Domestic flight. About one hour in the air, from around US$160 to 170 each way.

Prices and schedules change, so always confirm with your lodge before you leave.

Which one to choose

If it is your first time and you want no surprises, the boat from Sierpe is the simplest, and the ride through the mangroves is part of the trip. If time matters more than money, fly. And choose the 4x4 only if you are used to gravel roads and river crossings.
